The story follows astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon), a botanist and mechanical engineer, who is part of the Ares 3 mission on Mars. When a fierce dust storm forces the crew to abort the mission, Watney is struck by debris and presumed dead by his crewmates, who are forced to leave him behind as they evacuate the planet.
