Nearly twelve years later, fate intervenes when both twins are sent to the same summer camp in Maine, Camp Walden. During a competitive fencing match, they remove their masks and are stunned to discover they are mirror images of each other. Finding the right young actress to play both Hallie Parker and Annie James was crucial. Over 1,500 young actresses submitted audition tapes. Meyers had a specific vision, looking for what she called "a little Diane Keaton" to fill the roles. While future stars like Scarlett Johansson and Jena Malone were considered, the role ultimately went to 11-year-old Lindsay Lohan, who had previously been a model for Ford Models.
