Much of Asia's cinematic history was shot on cellulose acetate film. When exposed to heat and moisture—conditions inherent to Southeast Asia's tropical climate—acetate film undergoes a chemical reaction known as "vinegar syndrome." The film base shrinks, becomes brittle, emits a pungent vinegar odor, and eventually turns to unusable sludge.
