To understand the present is to understand the past. The modern LGBTQ rights movement is often bookmarked by the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City. While mainstream history has often focused on the gay men and lesbian activists of that era, the frontline of Stonewall was led by trans women of color, including Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. These pioneers fought back against police brutality at a time when "cross-dressing" laws were used to arrest anyone who did not conform to strict gender norms.
