The plot is set in motion when Tarzan is invited back to the Congo as a trade emissary for the British Parliament. However, this is a trap orchestrated by the film's villain, Captain Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz). Rom intends to deliver Tarzan to an old, vengeful enemy, Chief Mbonga (Djimon Hounsou). Accompanied by his fiercely loyal wife, Jane, and an American ally, George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson), Tarzan must return to the jungle he left behind to confront his past, protect the Congo from slave traders and resource exploiters, and fight for the people he once called his own.
