The first Malayalam film—the silent Vigathakumaran (The Lost Child)—was made in 1928 by J.C. Daniel, a dentist by profession who sold all his assets to fund the project. Yet the film failed economically, and more tragically, its heroine—a Dalit woman—was forced into exile following social rejection from Kerala’s caste-conscious audiences.
