The story opens with the death of the main character, 14-year-old Seita, in a train station. Through a flashback, we learn of his and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko's tragic struggle for survival. Orphaned and with their father away serving in the Japanese navy, the siblings go to live with a distant aunt. Initially given shelter, they soon face her indifference and resentment over having extra mouths to feed in a country where food is becoming dangerously scarce. Driven away by this hostility, Seita and Setsuko move into an abandoned bomb shelter to live on their own, only to face malnutrition, illness, and ultimately, death.
