Faced with the undeniable reality that the dead are returning to life, Travis, Madison, and Nick plan to flee the city. However, Nick begins suffering from severe heroin withdrawal. Madison braves the increasingly dangerous outside world to scavenge prescription medication from her school's locked dispensary. There, she encounters Tobias, a perceptive high school student who had previously tried to warn her about the impending apocalypse. Together, they survive an attack by the school's newly turned principal, Artie. Elsewhere, Travis ventures into the city to rescue his son, Chris, and his fiercely independent ex-wife, Liza. They get caught in the middle of violent civil unrest sparked by police shooting an undead homeless man. With the streets rioting and burning around them, Travis, Liza, and Chris take refuge inside a barbershop owned by a Salvadoran immigrant, Daniel Salazar.
