(2026) : A major horror-comedy collaboration between Indonesia and the Korean studio behind Parasite .
This paper examines the rise of ustadz (preachers) and hijrah influencers on Indonesian YouTube, who blend religious sermons with entertainment formats such as vlogs, pranks, and reaction videos. Drawing on a multimodal analysis of the top 50 religiously-affiliated entertainment videos (2022–2024) and semi-structured interviews with young Muslim viewers, I argue that YouTube has become a key site for “platform Islam”—a hybrid genre that commodifies piety through algorithmic optimization. While creators frame their work as dakwah (spreading the faith), their video structures mirror mainstream entertainment: clickable thumbnails, suspenseful editing, and monetization strategies (super chats, brand deals with halal products). This creates tensions between sincerity and performance, and between religious authority and participatory fandom. The paper contributes to debates on digital religion, platform capitalism, and post-secular public spheres in Southeast Asia.
