Turning to his friend, the theatrical singer Vidyapathi (Kishore Kumar), the two hatch a wildly elaborate scheme: Vidyapathi will hide behind a curtain and sing, while Bhola mimes along, pretending that the magnificent voice is his own. What follows is a "riot of musical laughs" as the deception becomes more and more elaborate, leading to a climax of pure farce.
The story of Padosan is deceptively simple. Bhola (Sunil Dutt) is a simple man from a village who has taken a vow of celibacy. However, his resolve is immediately tested when a charismatic and beautiful woman named Bindu (Saira Banu) moves in next door. His problem is that Bindu is already smitten with her South Indian music teacher, Master Pillai (Mehmood), and Bhola knows he has no musical talent to compete with him.
