Cultural norms—such as (a strong sense of masculine pride) and marianismo (the expectation that women are submissive, self-sacrificing, and the moral/spiritual center of the family)—can discourage reporting and normalize violence. Additionally, immigration status can be a powerful tool of control. Undocumented women may fear that reporting their abuser will lead to their own deportation, while language barriers and a lack of culturally competent services further isolate them.
